Brown Rice Crispies

Ingredients:

4 cups crispy rice cereal
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup brown rice syrup

Preparation:

Spray an 11 x 7 or 9 x 13 pan generously with cooking spray.
Spray a large mixing bowl with cooking spray. Pour crispy rice cereal and chocolate chips in, mixing with your hands. Set aside.
In a small saucepan, heat peanut butter and brown rice syrup until the mixture bubbles.
Pour over crispy rice mixture in the bowl. Stir (a silicone spatula keeps the mixture from sticking) well. The chocolate chips will melt into the mixture at this point (yum!). Working quickly, spread the peanut butter rice crispy mixture into the prepared pan. Let peanut butter rice crispy treats cool completely before cutting into squares.

From: Barefoot Contessa

Ingredients

3/4 pound unsalted butter at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3 1/2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
Any preserves you like
(I made a chocolate ganache and used that instead of jam)
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix together the butter and sugar until they are just combined. Add the vanilla. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour and salt, then add them to the butter-and-sugar mixture. Mix on low speed until the dough starts to come together. Dump onto a surface dusted with flour and shape into a flat disk. Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.

Roll the dough 1/4-inch thick and cut 2 3/4-inch rounds with a plain or fluted cutter. With 1/2 of the rounds, cut a hole from the middle of each round with a heart or spade shaped cutter. Place all the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and chill for 15 minutes.

Bake the cookies for 20 to 25 minutes, until the edges begin to brown. Allow to cool to room temperature. Spread raspberry preserves on the flat side of each solid cookie. Dust the top of the cut-out cookies with confectioners' sugar and press the flat sides together, with the raspberry preserves in the middle and the confectioners' sugar on the top.

Self Hardening Salt Clay

11/2 cup Salt

4 cups flour

11/2 cups water

1 tea. alum (as a preservative if clay is not baked)

Can get it at a major supermarket in the spice isle

1. Mix the dry ingredients together in a plastic bowl, then add water gradually

2. When dough forms a ball around the soon, knead the dough will adding water if it is too crumbly.

3. This clay can also be baked. Set the over to 300 and bake small shapes for 30-40 minutes or until hard

Potato Prints for wrapping paper

We decided to make our annual homemade wrapping paper.

Materials:

New Potatoes

Grocery paper bags

Paint

Cut the potato in half, use a marker and draw the shape, cut it out with an exacto blade, and use a knife around the perimeter of potato, and cut to the outline. Put paint on paper plates, and start stamping. Juliet had so much fun.

Baby # 2 almost here

So as baby #2 is about to arrive, I have much on my mind, how I want to be different, how can I return to myself a bit more, with life being more crazy. Inspired by Keri Smith's list of what she wants, here I go:

I would like to be more confident in the decisions I make, and not care what others think.

I would like to ask for more of what I need, and not care what the outcome is.

I would like to create a home that is more calm, and creative, and not a mess

I would like to stick to one project at a time. My fairy people.

I would like to be more systematic about filing stuff, and profiling what I have done.

I would like to communicate more with the ones I have had in my life. I have been so out of it.

More to say, but not in the head right now. I will return.

I am been having fun feeling the creativity blow in my hands and head. It seems to roll in like a storm, and is stagnant like a pond. So I am going to go with it. I am not feeling inspired to draw, but rather to craft toys and such.

So artistically, I would like to:
Paint flash cards of things
Paint the heartpeople and come up with a story concept to submit the idea to a children’s book publisher
Develop the recipe cards in to a cookbook and send a query letter to a publisher. First find the publisher
Create a line of stationery
Become a baker
Redo my website
Cook amazing things
Crochet
Send promos out of a piece of art, which piece and see if I can get more work
Paint my kattuba
Paint the pictures for the tea book, and submit the idea to a publisher, find what publisher and send a query, a mock up book, and a color piece
Send the heartperple book idea, May you, or change the characters to something more recognizable, which is what the teacher said, and submit that. But first make a mock up
Develop the heartpeople, illustration wise
Paint a picture from a magazine image or story that inspires me
Create some recipe cards for the moms club newsletter
Read some new books to up the intellectual side
Be a better mother; or rather learn about how I can be a better mother
Give my little lovely all the love I can give
Give Juliet a mom that is happy and satisfied, and that is taking care of herself
Update a blog
Assemble, upload, and order photos

So many things, no wonder I am making myself crazy. How could I possible do all that is listed above? There is no way.

So how can I make myself satisfied creatively, and be a present mom and wife and friend, and daughter, and sister. Clear the plate. How can I feel good about my self and my life and be simple? I can do it.

There is a pressure to be using my skills, but I am a new mom, a year into it. There is no way to satisfy my list. How about create from what inspires me at the moment, no pressure.

To be a great mom, prepare and make healthy food, and bake homemade gifts. I want to be different. Courageous. A woman satisfied, and knowing what works. What creates a cloud, a storm. Clear the clouds from what could be a clear day.

So as I review my last posts, I am reminded that it has been a long time and it is time to log my creative life. I have created, but I am not the explorer I have been in the past. And I remind myself that I am a transformed person, I cannot expect to be the same. I am a mother now. But I need to assess what I have done, and see it on screen. So I have decided to put a list of the things that I have created and have done in the last several months. I have posted many of these these things on the month I did them.

Taking care of another fully, learning about how I can continue to take care of myself. I have not been great at this, but today I begin. Juliet's party is tomorrow, and I am excited. It is going to be fun, and full of all the people we love.

Just on HGTV - March 9th. Pretty fun. I was making this recipe board. It played again on August 31st., Juliet's 1st birthday, and I was 3 months pregnant with her in the show. My sister asked for my help while we were in Kauai with making some special cookies. She wanted to give a thank you gift to some movie producers she had worked with (a war satire). So a grenade cookie was here request. So I made a cookie cutter out of cardboard, and attempted my first royal icing cookie. So here it is. I was happy with how it came out.

I did this as a gift for my mother-in-law. She mentioned a site where you can get a paint by number kit of any picture from any picture you upload. I felt guilty if I used the kit, so I did it myself using gouache.

I was inspired after reading the interview on Danny Gregery's site about Kate Williamson's new book on Japan. I was there in 1996, and I worked on a Japanese / English travel journal of inpiring words. Here is one of the pages:

I had a lightflash, that projected my state of mind. I realized I was obsessed with what I wasn't doing and I haven't acknowledged what I have done.

That looks pretty good to me. So today, I change my attitude . . . for good. Do art because I love it. Not for it to be seen. But for the necessity of it. And life will take its our course. Share it on this blog, give it to friends.

Don't speak about what I'm not doing, but what I have done. I realize negativity become the truth. Remember "everyday matters"; to change your attitude, to recreate, to be new. Do things you want to. . . No rational. Good-bye bad attitude.

Well, I have waited to write, and mostly because I do not know how open to be. I am 29 weeks pregnant, and I am feeling the instability that comes with surging hormones. I was OK for awhile, but now I am back. Back to a sense of discomfort, about where I am and where I am going. Where do I put my art, will I continue to create.

I create now, but quite sporadically and I think about it all the time. I need to be present in the moment and grateful that I have a baby growing in me. I am very excited, but getting a bit nervous that it is around 2 1/2 months away. Wow!!! It seemed to go slow and now it is going fast. So much to do.

So I want to change my attitude. I was to cherish this time, rather than feel lonely, or indecisive. I want to be strong, and enjoy life as this is what it is. I want to flow down this river that I am on, rather that get hit by the rocks. I always see the rocks, rather than the water above. Let me flow, and let me fill my life with all the beauty that surrounds.

The unknown is a hard place to be, and that is what is overwhelming me. I have always felt like a mermaid, who could find here sacred space and feel free. Will I feel this again if I decide to change my mind. I hope so. So I decide today, to accept and see what I do do, and not pick up on what I don't. I focus on the wrong stuff.

What a blessing, to have a human being grow inside me, and to feel her presence, and I can only think about what art project I am going to do, and not doing. So river invite me in again, and I will float on top, and you can take me where you go. I will look at the beautiful scenery around me, and if a rock scraped me, I will heal quickly, because I know there are more sites to see.

Goodbye to you rocks that come visit me. I have a adventure to feel. Lots of love, and positive thoughts.

Well, I was terribly overwelmied by the requirements of having a baby, but now I am going at my pace. It is easy to get influenced by the family and friends, and move at their pace. I have taken a step back, and i will get things done when I need to. I am enjoying my life, taking walks, painting, drawing, experiencing, and taking care of what I need to.

It is important to take a step back.
